Liberation of Leningrad from the blockade.27.01.2017

St. Petersburg is celebrating the liberation of Leningrad from the blockade on 27 January.

The plan of events was dedicated to the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad from the blockade.

Official events:

The solemn-mourning ceremony of leaving flowers near the memorial plaque at Nevsky 14 was held.

At the Radio House, on the corner of Malaya Sadovaya street and Italian street, poetry by Olga Bergholz was read.

Reconstruction of the firework of 1944 was organized on the field of Mars.

The action "Blockade Bread of Leningrad". In St. Petersburg 1500 pieces of "siege  bread" were dealt out in memory of the 125 grams, which have been given to locals in the harsh days of the siege.

On Palace Square accurate models of airships were raised to the sky in honor of the defenders of the besieged Leningrad. During the war, huge balloons were guarding the streets from the sighting bombing of enemy aircraft.

The action "Candle of Memory". In St. Petersburg there is a tradition - the inhabitants of the city have brought to Anichkov Palace hundreds of candles. They were lit during the familiar sound of the besieged Leningrad - beating of tne siege metronome.

Events were held at Piskarevsky cemetery - the world's largest cemetery of the victims of the Second World War. There are 186 mass graves in the cemetery, where 420,000 residents are buried, who died of starvation, bombing, shelling, and 70 000 soldiers-defenders of Leningrad. In 1941-1944, every day from 3 to 10 thousand people were buried in the cemetery.

The minute of silence was held - according to various sources, from 600 thousand to 1.5 million people perished inside the enemy ring.

In the evening at 9.00 pm artillery salute thundered on the quay of Peter and Paul Fortress.
